Call Centers in Mauritius – what they do not tell you
The call center industry in Mauritius is still growing, even if since last year, the economy is not at its highest.Mauritius identified ICT/BPO as a fifth pillar of its economy alongside the sugar industry, the textile industry, the tourism industry and the financial services industry.Call Centers in Mauritius
The telecommunication infrastructure installation has been a key element to help boost the ICT/BPO industry. In the year 2,000, the island was connected to the SAT3/SAFE cable.
The main vision behind this improvement in the telecommunication services was to position Mauritius on the world business map as:
1) The host country to many high quality Call Centers
2) A favourite destination for the business process outsourcing (BPO) and for computer software programming.
3) A platform for easy access to data
4) A country with a highly competent and qualified workforce
Since then, Mauritius has succeeded into positioning itself as a preferred destination for business outsourcing. One of the main strengths lies in the fact that the number of qualified bilingual workforce in Mauritius is high. Of course, some speak with an accent, but many speak without any accent.
The second thing is that the labour force is well educated, which makes Mauritius more competitive. Moreover, Mauritius is highly known for its various cultural knowledge which helps in communicating and performing customer services.According to the Outsourcing and Telecommunications Association of Mauritius (OTAM), the Outsourcing sector employs more than 18000 persons. The ICT/BPO sector in Mauritius is subdivided in six other sub sectors: Networking, Software Development, Web, the Software analysis and testing, as well as the creation of information systems softwares. The ICT/BPO sector generated alone, 304 billion dollars in the last 5 years.
The only downside is that, even though this sector has generated millions for the investors, the outsourcing business owners and the government, the standard of living for a call center employee is still low as they still work for the minimum wage. This is why, this sector has the highest level of employee turnover amongst all others.
But Mauritius still remains the favourite destination for many international companies, mostly European, wanting to outsource their call centers. For more info on the Mauritian call centers, contact us.
