Which African country or nation has the best standard of living? The survey of the Ecole Polytechnique de Lausanne (EPFL) and the magazine Afrique Méditerranée Business (AMB), published its first edition on Tuesday 21st February, attributing without any surprise, the first place to Marrakech in front of Johannesburg, Alexandria,  Port- Louis, the capital of Mauritius, Casablanca, Tunis, Cairo, Rabat, Cape Town and Fez.

The capital of Mauritius ranked 4th among the 100 best cities in Africa where it is good to live. Most of the usual surveys focus on the potential development for foreign investors or the cost of living for expats. For the first time, it’s based on the quality of life in each city for its own inhabitants, based on their demographics. The researchers collected for a year a series of indicators to assess the performance of these cities.

The score obtained is the average of seven themes: society, habitat, spatial development, infrastructure, environment and ecology, governance and economy. Each theme is composed of a dozen simple indicators, that is the result of several criteria. This data collection effort took nearly a year. It was carried out by researchers from the Ecole Polytechnique de Lausanne and will be published in full in April and then updated every year.

The results show that the cities who have understood that controlled urbanisation have powerful economic engines.
