Facebook adds Tor Support on Android

Facebook is offering Tor support on Android providing an easy way to encrypt your Facebook viewing. All you need is to download the Orbot proxy app to match this stick, after installing Orbot, visit your Facebook “App Settings” menu to enable the feature using a new preference switch. Orbot uses Tor to encrypt your Internet traffic and then hides it by bouncing through a series of computers around the world.

“Everybody in the world needs more privacy online and almost everybody is on Facebook, This will allow people to choose whether to share their location or not. Android support could help expand Tor due to Facebook’s large following. Facebook has more than 1.5 billion monthly active users” said Kate Krauss, a spokeswoman for the Tor Project.

The new development comes during a time of increased discussion about internet privacy. The issue of ‘back doors’ in encryption – or mechanisms that allow governments and law enforcement to read private internet communications – was discussed at the recent Democratic debate in the US.

Facebook first embraced Tor in 2014, when it created an “onion address” for people who wanted to log on from Tor-enabled browsers. At the time, it said it wanted to eliminate “unnecessary hurdles” for people connecting to Facebook using Tor. In a post on the social network Tuesday, Facebook said it’s expanding the service as “a sizeable community of people has grown to use this feature.”

It will be now easier to access Facebook from your android smartphone without letting other entities know that you are doing so. For some people this app is convenience but for others its lifesaving.
